The design concept driving this 2.8 million dollar complete remodel was to attract and retain talent as well as increase communication and collaboration between the news and sales teams at WKMG. The first floor is completely renovated to provide an open concept, increasing visual connections between the assignment desk, monitors, and news room managers. The assignment desk is designed to be an interview spot for “live in the news room” clips becoming the heartbeat of the space with producers and engineers positioned adjacent. The green room, dressing area and main conference room are adjacent to the lobby entrance. Translucent glass and 180° pivoting doors allow tours of guests to experience news production with total transparency.

Second floor is a much more tailored environment for sales and marketing staff. Still a very open concept, there are areas to engage in brainstorming using media walls, dry erase surfaces, and editing studios. All areas are designed to be used for creative collaboration including the formal conference rooms, media conference rooms, and the large multipurpose room. They are also comfortable for interview clip production and commercial previews.

Lighting is a highly technical support (for camera shots) as well as indicators for destination zones. Most areas have exposed ceilings. To further a hard edged, urban/industrial feel, a concrete look carpet tile was used with galvanized column covers. The overall result is a technologically and architecturally sophisticated environment that will provide future flexibility for this multimedia news facility.
